Advanced Math Tutors in Berkeley

Upper-division college math is a different world: proofs replace plug-and-chug, abstraction ramps up fast, and a single missed idea can make an entire course feel impenetrable. It's also the level where most tutoring services simply can't help — the material is too specialized.

This is where High Performance Tutoring stands out. Our advanced-math tutors are engineers, mathematicians, and graduate students who have taken these exact courses and can translate dense theory into intuition. Whether you're stuck on a proof in real analysis, a system in differential equations, or an eigenvalue computation in linear algebra, we meet you at your level and build from there.

Serving students across the East Bay — from Berkeley High, Albany High, and Piedmont High to UC Berkeley and community colleges.

Why Us

Why Berkeley Families Choose Our Tutors

Genuinely Specialized Tutors

We match you with a tutor who has actually completed the course you're taking — not a generalist stretching past their depth. It's the level most services can't cover, and where we shine.

Proofs and Computation

Advanced math blends rigorous proof with heavy computation. We build both — the logical structure of a proof and the mechanics of the calculation — so neither side trips you up.

Intuition Behind the Abstraction

Definitions and theorems make sense once you see what they're really doing. We connect the abstraction to pictures, examples, and applications so it finally clicks.

For College and Grad School

From a sophomore linear-algebra course to graduate PDEs or a qualifying exam, we support undergraduates, graduate students, and working professionals brushing up.

★★★★★
My tutor, Ingo, was incredibly helpful in guiding me toward a higher Quantitative GRE score. He was patient and thorough, and I learned more than just how to take the test — I learned fundamental math skills I'd let lapse. I'm really grateful for his help!

Tutoring with Ingo has been so helpful. He's helping me discover fundamentals I never learned, while showing me I know more than I thought. I appreciate how he breaks down each problem and helps me prepare for similar ones.

We've used High Performance Tutoring for two subjects, Calc and Chem, and have been very happy. The most important thing was for our son to feel confident, and that's exactly what happened. He came home saying, 'Now I get it.' Highly recommend.

High Performance Tutoring makes getting a tutor almost as easy as learning the material. I struggle learning calculus in a large class, and the one-on-one time makes everything come together much more clearly. They're very good at explaining problems people like me have. I now enjoy math.

We've used High Performance for two years. Victor helped my son with Chemistry — his grade went from a D to a B+, and he ended up liking the class. They've also tutored him in Algebra and for the ACT. They genuinely enjoy working with the kids, and the kids enjoy working with them!

Sean has been Kayla's math tutor for 18 months — she went from all C's in 6th grade to straight A's in honors math in 7th. He's always on time and prepared, and we're very appreciative of his commitment to her education.

A belated thank you to Liz for a semester of math tutoring. She essentially taught all of Algebra Honors II. My child received an A in the class and scored in the 99th percentile of the PSAT. We could not have done it without your kindness and teaching skills!

High Performance Tutoring is the best tutoring service in Salt Lake City! After trying several others, including resources at my university, I finally had great success. We'd work through my huge list of problems at a pace where I retained everything. I recommended them to my roommate, who loved it too.

A Parent's Question

“How do you match my student with the right tutor?”

We start by learning your student's goals, level, and learning style — then hand-pick a High Performance Certified tutor who fits. Your first hour is free, so you can make sure it's the right match before committing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your tutor starts by pinpointing exactly where you're getting stuck, then builds a personalized plan to close those gaps and build real understanding — not just homework answers. Every session is one-on-one and tailored to how you learn.

Your first hour of tutoring is completely free — no contracts, no commitment. We match you with a tutor, you meet for a full session, and you only continue if you're happy. It's how we let the quality of our tutors speak for itself. You can claim it in minutes by creating an account and booking online, or reach out and we'll set it up for you.

Tutoring starts at only $60/hour! Your exact rate depends on a few things: whether you meet online or in-person, whether it's an academic subject or SAT/ACT test prep, and whether you pay as you go or buy a package — bulk hours come at a discount. After your free first hour we'll put together a plan that fits your goals and budget. The easiest way to start is to create an account and set up your free first session online in minutes — or just call or text us at (510) 619-1058.

Your first session is free! After that, we keep a credit card on file and charge it as each session is completed — no large upfront payment and no long-term contract unless you choose to purchase a package at a discounted rate. And for SAT or ACT prep, you can spread the cost over 12 months with our financing option through Affirm.

We tutor in-person throughout the greater Berkeley area, and online anywhere in the U.S. — so distance is never a barrier to getting matched with the right tutor.

For in-person tutoring, you choose what's most convenient — your home, a local library, or a coffee shop — at the same price either way. Online sessions are more cost-effective and give you access to our full national network of tutors. Once you're matched, you and your tutor settle on a regular spot that works for you both.

We cover math from middle school through advanced college courses, the sciences (physics, chemistry, and biology), statistics, computer science, and SAT, ACT, and PSAT prep. Many of our tutors also help with the GRE, GMAT, and MCAT. Just ask about your specific subject or test — chances are we have a tutor for it.

Yes! It's one of our most popular options. We meet on Zoom or Google Meet in an interactive video classroom that's every bit as personalized as meeting in person, and it's typically more cost-effective. It also opens up our entire national network of tutors instead of limiting you to who's nearby, so you get the best possible match for your subject and goals — from anywhere in the U.S.

We hire only the top 5% of tutor applicants and train them to become High Performance Certified — vetted for subject mastery, teaching ability, and personality. And unlike companies that just hand you a name from a directory, our tutors work as a team: they share notes and coordinate behind the scenes, so switching tutors or getting help across multiple subjects stays seamless. You're not getting a random tutor — you're getting one of the best, backed by a whole team.

Tell us the subject, your goals, your schedule, and whether you'd prefer in-person or online sessions, and we'll match you with the tutor who fits best. If it's not the right fit, we'll find you another at no extra cost.

Just let us know and we'll match you with a different tutor at no extra cost — no awkward conversation needed. Because our tutors work as a team and share notes, a new tutor can pick up right where the last one left off. We care about the right fit, not just any fit.

For the 95% of students who complete our program, SAT scores typically improve 100–300+ points and ACT scores 3–7 points — and those are typical ranges, not a ceiling (we've had students raise their ACT by 10 points or more). Results aren't guaranteed; the single biggest factor is the effort you put in between sessions, and our personalized approach is built to maximize every point.

Of course we understand that life happens. We only ask for 6 hours' notice to reschedule or cancel a session, which is far more generous than the 24-hour policy most tutoring companies require. Just contact us and we'll find a new time that works. You can also log in to your account and reschedule or cancel a session there. You have complete control over your schedule.
