What to look for

  • Real subject expertise. They should know the material cold, well beyond the level your student is working at.
  • More than one way to explain. The best tutors have several ways to teach the same idea, so when the first does not land, they switch.
  • They build around your student. Every session should target what this student needs, not run off a fixed script.
  • Rapport. A student learns far more from a tutor they trust and actually want to show up for.

Questions worth asking before you hire

  • How do you figure out what a student is actually struggling with?
  • How will we know it is working, and how do you measure progress?
  • Are the sessions truly one on one?
  • What do you do when something is not working?

Specific, confident answers are a good sign. Vague ones are a red flag.

Red flags to avoid

  • Guarantees of a specific grade or score. Real results depend on the student.
  • A one-size-fits-all program that never adapts.
  • No clear way to measure whether it is helping.
