What the PSAT is actually for

  • National Merit. The junior-year PSAT/NMSQT score is what qualifies students for the National Merit Scholarship Program, which can mean recognition and scholarship dollars.
  • SAT practice. The PSAT and SAT test the same skills in the same format, so it is a realistic dress rehearsal.
  • A checkpoint. It shows where a student stands early enough to build a smart SAT plan.

Should my child prep for it?

For a strong student near their state's projected National Merit Selection Index cutoff, yes. Qualifying can lead to recognition and, for some students, scholarship money, and the cutoff is high enough that a little focused prep can make the difference. And because the PSAT and SAT overlap so much, that prep is never wasted, it doubles as an early start on the SAT. For most other students, treat it as a valuable practice run rather than a high-stakes test.
