When Should My Child Start SAT Prep?

Most families start later than they should. The sweet spot for many students is the second half of sophomore year into junior year. Here is how to work backward from the test date and pick the right start.

Most families start later than they should. The sweet spot for many students is the second half of sophomore year into junior year, early enough to prepare steadily and still leave room to retest, without colliding with the busiest stretch of high school.

The right start date is not really about a grade level. It is about working backward from the test your student is aiming for.

Work backward from the test date

  • Pick the target test date first. Many juniors aim for a spring SAT, with fall of senior year as a backup.
  • Count back for prep. A meaningful gain usually takes two to three months of steady work plus full-length digital practice tests, and more for a large jump.
  • Leave room to retest. Starting early means a disappointing first attempt is a data point, not a crisis.

Why earlier beats later

An early start lets a student prepare at a sustainable pace, absorb material between sessions, and take the SAT more than once if needed. A late start forces cramming into the busiest part of junior year, which raises stress and lowers results. The PSAT in the fall of junior year is a natural checkpoint to see where a student stands and decide on a plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

For many students, the second half of sophomore year or early junior year is ideal. That leaves room for a diagnostic, a steady prep plan, and a first official attempt with time to retest if needed, without colliding with junior-year workload and activities.

Work backward. A meaningful score gain usually takes two to three months of steady work plus practice tests, so start at least that far ahead of the target test date, and earlier if the goal is a large jump.
